Jog Scotland 5k Challenge - Inverleith Park & Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh

The Jog Scotland Mascot!
SUPER cute!! :)
(whoever was inside must have been melting in the heat tho!)

So as I mentioned in my previous posts we took part in the Jog Scotland 5k last night as part of our work Summer Party... yea.. they really make you work for it at my work eh??!!
It was a sunny and warm evening which was a welcome change from the rain we had over the weekend and on Monday, the course was quite picturesque as it looped through part of the Botanic Gardens then down around the pond at Inverleith Park..

I decided to try and run/jog as much as I comfortably could, I walk about 3k home after work most nights, so the distance seemed a bit daunting.. in so much as it was like a walk home and then almost all the way back to work again.. I wasn't worried about it as I often do full days of walking when I'm travelling, but it's just the thought of it being a "competition".. and not being able to stop and take a break! I took part in the Times Colonist 10k in Victoria, BC - also because of work.. (are you sensing a trend here?) but I walked most of it and it took me I think around about 2 hours to finish it.

One thing you need to understand (so you don't think I'm a big baby/drama queen!) is that I actually physically can't run very well... I have very flat feet, which results in me rolling my ankles and also my knees.. which has altered my gait over the years to the point where my knees don't track properly in the joint.. I have orthotic insoles from podiatrists, exercises from physios and all sorts.. I'm not just making this up! So running is not something I do often, or for enjoyment or even for fitness because it just causes PAIN! And not in the good way like after a hard workout...

Anyways.. here's some photos from the evening..

These photos were taken as I approached the finish line..
Team Photo Before

Running under a hedge "doorway".. Not sure if you can tell but after the doorway is like a tunnel made from bamboo plants where it  was nice and shady.. Very pretty!

By this stage of the race I had no idea if that 3k marker meant I had completed 3k or if I still had 3k to go... it really wasn't very reassuring either way!!!
The Scotty Dog greets you at the finish line..
I gave him a High 5 (yea, I'm cool like that)
YEAY!! You get a medal for taking part/finishing!!

Team Photo After
Noone looking too much worse for wear! Everyone still smiling! ; )

My time in case you were wondering was 38mins 15sec
Not exactly a world record but I'm pretty chuffed!!
xx Caz

ps. The random pictures on people's shirts are just to cover up numbers & logos.. in case you were thinking I'm a total weirdo that just puts random pictures on my photos!! :D

Bell's Diner, Stockbridge, Edinburgh

Last night we had our work Summer Party... which started with us all taking part in the Jog Scotland 5k Challenge at Inverleith Park.. (My picasa is going a bit nuts at the mo and won't let me edit my pictures, so I shall share the run bit in another post.. hopefully when my picasa isn't going mental...)  Afterwards we had dinner at Bell's Diner... The restaurant is tiny... we took over a third of the restaurant with our party of 10. The atmosphere is super relaxed, the decor rustic, the service is pretty good considering there was only one server on her own.. The food was fantastic and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Here's what I ate:
Fried Onion & Garlic Bread Starter
No battered onion rings but the onions at the top were nice and crispy
Little bit greasy near the bottom but so delicious!!
Chocolate Milkshake
Proper diner milkshake with a scoop of ice cream at the bottom...
DEEEEELICIOUS!!

Condiments tray, from top:
Sweet corn, sweet onion, bbq, ketchup, chutney & something mexican (?) it was spicy..
With salad dressing in the middle.. I didn't taste any of these apart from the ketchup.. :(
I had a lemon pepper steak.. cooked to PERfection!
With a mountain of fries and salad.. (I have to admit I was defeated and didn't finish my meal..)
I ended up walking home.. (Yea I know, after doing a 5k.. Crazy lady!)
But I was so full I needed a walk and it was a very pleasant evening out..
Not sure if you can see the orangey/dusky colours still in the sky??
This was taken on my street about 11.30pm... with no flash & only about a 1/20 shutter speed..
Because we're so far North, we only get about 3 or 4 hours of proper darkness in the Summer time!! :) *love*

Well, there you have it my lovelies.. my feast from last night!! It was so delicious and made me super duper excited for some proper American Diner food on my roady this summer!!

Prices were beyond reasonable with the damage being around £320 for 10 of us including 4 bottles of wine, 1 beer, 2 milkshakes, a starter and main for everyone, a few sides with mains and a couple of desserts and 5 teas and coffees...

I would definitely venture back to try a burger and devour another milkshake.. they even have lime flavour! YUM!!
xx Caz

Happy Eating!

ps. is anyone else's blogger and picasa doing all sorts of weirdness?? or is it just me??

The Bloggess - And that's why you should learn to pick your battles

Possibly one of the best blog posts I've come across so far...

                                         Enjoy!

From the Touch Rugby World Cup to the Kings of Leon...

So, it should be fairly apparent that I'm the biggest nana in town.. Monday - Friday I get up, I work, I go home, I cook dinner (most nights), eat dinner, potter around fb with the tv on, shower, then bed... Thursday nights I go to yoga if I am feeling inspired, tho recently late night shopping and the high street sales have proved much more seductive than yoga! Saturdays & Sundays, unless the weather is really good, or we have a reason to go out (ie. we need groceries), I'm more than happy to potter around home in my pj's and not leave the apartment..

I think I got my major partying days under my belt in my late teens/early 20's and now I'm just jaded.. and potentially also spoilt because due to various jobs I was very well looked after when I was out and about in Auckland.. and to be honest.. last trip I was home.. I was still very well looked after when I went out.. yes that means I mostly only go places where I know someone on staff.. but for the most part, they are places I would probably go regardless.. I digress..

So, in recent years I've chosen to lead a much more sedentary lifestyle and that's been totally fine with me.. when you've spent as many years behind the bar serving the belligerently inebriated, it's a good reminder as to why it's probably not so great being "that" person too often in your life... don't get me wrong.. I've done my fair share of dancing on tables and what have you.. gah.. I digress again..

What I'm trying to say is.. as with most things in my life.. when it rains it pours... and I'll go for weeks without anything on the social radar, then all of a sudden everything will happen all at the same time... last week was one of those weeks..

Wednesday - I caught up with Sarah, whom I went to high school with for a few years and pretty much haven't seen since.. so a little over a decade.. (don't do the maths!) as she was in town with her partner who plays on the Welsh Touch Rugby team, the Touch Rugby World Cup was on in Edinburgh this past week.. So Wednesday night she picked me up from work and we went to watch Wales vs. Austria (14-5 respectively), then I went back to their apartment and had dinner with them and some of the other boys they were sharing the apartment with..  tho it wasn't a heavy drinking night, it was a late night...

Thursday - I needed to return some stuff to a store and ended up going shopping as instructed by mother..

Friday - I had intentions to try and catch up with Sarah again but was just wiped when I got home and I think I was in bed before midnight... (nana!)

Saturday - Formula 1 qualifying, then food before heading out to an album launch.. then it was Shaun's leaving do, as well as Scotty's b'day (which I had to miss).. and as with any evening out involving Shaun.... there were many many jager bombs involved.. I pulled a houdini at 1am and skipped going to the "clubs"...

Sunday - nursing a sore head while I watched the Formula 1 race.. there wasn't much time to feel sorry for myself before having to get ready to head to the Kings of Leon concert... (whilst missing catching up with friends Steph & Phil who are over from Canada - will have to catch up with them when I'm over in the Summer..)

Which all = Monday - a very tired Caz at work who is very slowly losing the will to live... luckily, the bossman sounds like he had an even harder weekend and so I'm at least in good company..

I will hopefully get around to sharing some photos of these various events.. but considering I still haven't posted about my holiday to Ireland last month.. I probably wouldn't hold my breath... *sigh* but you never know!!

Just got a text from another friend from NZ "Montreal".. he's in town and wants to meet up tonight...

Tomorrow is our work "Summer Party" - ahem.. we are somehow signed up to take part in Jog Scotland and are running/walking 5km.. before going to dinner at some burger joint and a few drinks... - WHO has ever had a staff party that involved running 5km!?!?!?! WHAT!?!?! True story of my life...

An ode to my "tree trunks"

{via}
So yesterday as I was going about my normal blog reading business when I came across this fabulous post over at monster cakes... (let it be known that I think she's pretty fantastic AND she loves Gilmore Girls AND she rocks the coolest pixie cut - tho she's growing it out at the mo but still looks fab! - and in my books, you don't really get much more awesome than that!)  Anywhoooos... (I'm going to stop before I sound like a TOTAL stalker.. oh too late?? nevermind... )

Moving right along!

I then left this message for her:

"I love this post! (I love all your posts.. to be fair.. ) but this one rings very true to me!

I've always had ginormous thighs and big calves.. (it's a nightmare trying to buy boots.. coz they just WILL NOT zip up... and ones without zips.. well.. let's just not talk about that ok?) but you are so right that they are such a blessing.. they have taken me on many adventures.. climbed boulders, rocks, Middle Eastern ruins.. they've allowed me to flail around on tree branches in the name of "climbing"... and I am going to follow your lead and cherish my legs for the tree trunks that they are.. keeping me firmly grounded.. (and it hurts more when you kick someone! HA! - HA! to all those wi
th skinny beanpole legs that pack no punch!)"

Sorry if that last bit makes no sense.. the sense I'm trying to convey is people with tree trunks for legs do a lot more damage when they kick someone something than people who have skinny beanpole legs.. and if you are one of those with skinny beanpole legs... - well your consolation is that you can pull of skinny jeans with a lot more finesse and if that's not enough.. well TOUGH titties!! =p

She then left this message for me:

"I just had to tell you that I was cracking up when you said "tree trunks" on my blog, because that is the exact term used to describe them. From now on, I'll just remind myself that they are like that to keep me "grounded" and thankful. Thanks for the idea! And let's change together and be proud of the way we were made. : ) I think we can do it."

I think we can too!

I wanted to share this exchange with you all because I think we all have hang ups about our bodies.. big or small (hang ups.. tho I guess bodies as well)... and I think as long as we are healthy and our weight and size is not impacting on our health then we should feel blessed that we the majority of us are able bodied and our limbs function to the best of their abilities.. sure I'd like my thighs to be a bit smaller and my tummy a bit flatter, and one of my goals is still to exercise more and lose a bit of weight but on the other hand.. I also want to try and remember to be thankful...
xx Caz

ps. tree pose is one of my favourites in yoga.. maybe it's because I have trunks for legs!! :)

Philosophical monkey, out~

Filling in some Blanks after a Bacon & Egg Roll on Friday...

1.   The last thing I ate was       bacon & egg on a brown roll with "red sauce" - tomato sauce/ketchup/whatever you happen to call it..   .

2.  The next thing I'd like to eat is    nothing.. I seriously am so full I can't think of what I'd like to eat... maybe something a little acidic like an apple.. my tummy feels greasy...  .

3.  The best things     are sometimes the things you don't think about.. the little things we take for granted.. without which the bigger things would not be possible... is that philosophical enough for ya?? :D  .

4.  Something that makes me supremely and utterly happy is   my little monkeys.. they are soft and cuddly and cheer me up when I am sad.. and they never complain about getting thrown out of bed..  .

5.  Sports are     a great excuse to get your drink on in the sun!! And better when they involve motors... like F1 or rally cars..  .

6.  I miss      all my friends in far flung countries.. I've said it before, and I'll say it again... can we get teleporting on the go already?? Then I could visit them all the time!!   .

7.  Right now I am       ridiculously full from my roll.. and appreciating dress down Friday!!  .

As always.. Head along to visit Lauren if you want to join in the fun!!

Happy Friday Friends!!

Mug Brownie

The first time I had this was when I was visiting Ms S in Melbourne (many YEARS ago).. we were doing our usual lounging around after dinner and she asked if I wanted Mug Brownie.. I was like.. what the EFF is MUG BROWNIE??  She looked at me like I was mental coz I didn't know what she was talking about.. (maybe also because the name is rather indicative of what it is..) She proceeded to whip up two of these amazing little concoctions and I was smitten...

I remember asking her for the recipe (not so many but still years ago).. I'm pretty sure I wowed some dinner guests with it.. then kinda proceeded to forget about its existence until the other day when another Ms S mentioned she'd "baked" a cake in her microwave... her mister attested to its tastiness and she is a keen baker (using an oven) and cook, so I don't doubt its yumminess.. but it DID remind me of the mug brownie... I did a quick search of my emails to see if I had Ms S's recipe.. but alas.. no luck.. then I thought, surely the tinternet would supply me with one!! I was not disappointed!!

This is the recipe which is on most websites:

    2 T Vegetable oil
    2T Water
    1/4 tsp. Vanilla extract
    dash salt
    2T Unsweetened cocoa powder
    4T Granulated sugar
    4T Flour

I also found this recipe and adapted my brownies according to people's comments and tweaked it a bit..

      Caz's Mug Brownies:

1T Vegetable oil - I would have used applesauce but I didn't have any..
      3T Water
      1/4 t Vanilla extract
      dash salt
      2T cocoa powder
      2T Granulated sugar
      2T flour

The websites say combine wet ingredients, then add cocoa powder, then sugar, then flour, but I just dumped everything in the mug and gave it all a good mix with a fork...

We had some mini marshmallows which the mister brought home from somewhere.. apparently the girlfriend or one of his co-workers works at a coffee shop and they were getting rid of them? *shrug* - anyways, I threw a few on top for good measure...

We have a 800W microwave and I zapped mine for 60 secs. and they were pretty good.. still a teeeny bit wet at the bottom, so maybe a bit longer woulda been ok.. depends how you like your brownie I guess!!

      Places I Have Been

So, while I was filling out the meme today, there was a question asking which "foreign countries" I have been to... now, I dunno how one defines "foreign".. but with the help of a couple of fb apps.. I am able to tell/show you the places I've been... ready??!!

If you want to see a map of the countries I've been to... click here... I've chosen the option where it breaks it down to individual states/provinces rather than just USA, Canada and Australia...

For a much more detailed list including cities/towns....

      - I'm sure there are ones in Europe I've missed out... but whatevs...  I am hoping to pin a LOT more places this Summer when Jonny and I drive thru some of the US of Eh!!

      Conversations with Mother #2

So, my mum tried to call last night and I missed her call, then she tried to call me twice today while I was out flea market & charity shopping...  I text her to tell her I was out and that I'd call her tomorrow, but she text back to say she'd call me tonight.. which got me a bit worried, as she's usually more than happy to wait a few days for me to call her back... and as I said previously, we speak very rarely and considering it hadn't been long since our last conversation.. I was thinking it was going to be bad news.... Luckily it wasn't... so after our discussion about what she phoned for.. she asked where I'd been when she called in the morning, so I told her I was at a flea market with some friends.. this is the conversation which followed:

mum: you should be careful about the stuff you buy at flea markets, they are usually not very good quality.
me: well, this is a flea market where people come and sell their stuff.. (I think she was thinking more like Camden markets where it's stalls rather than like a jumble sale)
mum: so you're buying second hand clothes?
      me: yes
      mum: what did you buy?
      me: two jackets
mum: don't you think it's weird to wear other people's clothes?
      me: no..
      mum: really?
me: yes.. (obviously, if I'm buying them..??)
mum: I'd never think to buy second hand clothes.. it's weird...
      me: not really...
mum: what if the people have you know... "passed away" (she actually said passed away in English... weird!?)
me: well, then they don't need their clothes anymore!
mum: but what if they come back and are wondering where their clothes went?
      me: ummm...
mum: they might be angry they can't wear their clothes and you know... "pew pew" (she actually made that sound.. like when you make a gunshot sound.. pew pew - NO JOKE)
me: well, they should be shitty at their family members who sold their clothes, and not at me
mum: well they might be confused and wonder why you are wearing their clothes... they might really like their clothes..
me: well, won't they be happy that someone is happy wearing their clothes??
mum: hmmm.. it's weird.. what if they have some kind of disease? or skin problem?
me: well, I WASH the clothes before I wear them.. so they're CLEAN...
mum: it's still weird.. it makes me feel funny...
      me: ok
mum: it gives me the heebie geebies... bleugh (she actually made the bleugh sound...) you don't know anything about who had the clothes before you... it's not like if your aunt takes my clothes because they know I'm clean.. and they know it's because I don't fit the clothes anymore...
      me: ok..??
mum: how much were the jackets you bought??
me: £5 each, so £10 for both
mum: well, that's not very expensive
me: that's kind of the point
mum: why are you buying second hand clothes?? it's weird.. we're not poor, you can afford new clothes
me: yes I know, but I haven't been able to find a jacket, I've had a look in the shops and there's nothing I like..
mum: well, what are you looking for
      me: like a trench coat..
mum: well, why don't you buy one from Burberry, you live in the UK, surely you can go to a Burberry
me: because their coats are expensive
mum: well, it's an investment... you know you're getting good quality
me: but I schlep around in my clothes and don't take care of them.. so don't want to spend loads of money on a coat...
mum: well, then just find one that's cheaper
me: but I haven't seen anything I like.. and I don't want to spend a lot of money on something I don't really like.. if I get something cheap, I don't care that I'm not crazy about it.. but if I'm going to spend a lot of money, I want to find something I like...
mum: I don't like the idea of you wearing second hand clothes.. £5 isn't a lot, you should give that jacket to a friend and go and buy yourself a new jacket
me: but there's nothing in the shops
mum: how can there be nothing in the shops!
      me: everything is expensive!
      mum: how much is expensive?
      me: like £100
mum: (does the conversion) well, that's not a lot!
      me: umm...
mum: why don't you go to like Z.....
      me: Zara?
mum: yea.. they'll have a nice trench coat
      me: ok..
mum: if you think it's expensive, then you can put it on my credit card and it will be my present to you
      me: ok
mum: but just give away those jackets you bought today.. give them to your friends or something... say your mum.. actually don't say I said.. just tell them you don't like them anymore and give them away...
me: umm.. ok...?? I could take it to a charity store!
mum: Oooh, that's good!! You could be doing a good deed!!
      me: mmm hmmm...
mum: Anyway, I just don't like it... bleugh... why would you buy second hand clothes? that's so weird... you're STRANGE! it's not like we're poor...
      me: yes I know...
mum: well go and buy yourself a new jacket.. buy two if you want... buy a few.. well not like five or six.. but one or two is ok.. put it on my credit card.. it'll be my present.. just give those other ones away...
      me: fine
mum: you could go shopping tomorrow, it's Sunday!
      me: yes mum...
mum: well good.. it's settled then.. go buy yourself a new jacket tomorrow, don't wear second hand clothes.. it's weird
me: I'll just pop along to LV tomorrow then and buy myself a jacket shall I?
mum: sure, whatever.. just don't wear second hand clothes anymore...

MUAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Shopping Spree Courtesy of MUMMY!!  - Maybe I should talk to my mum more often!?!?!

I think I'll still keep my jackets.. coz they're quite nice jackets... I decided not to tell her I buy second hand clothes quite a lot and I thrift house wares too.. that would gross her right out... she'd probably fly out here and overhaul everything in my kitchen for fear there was stuff in there that someone else had used before...

      shhhhh.. noone tell my mum!!

Do I have the most ridiculous mother or what!?!?!

xx Cazside note: the monkey mister just referred to my updating my blog in "google reader and blogLand" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA  it's called blogger!! what a silly!!

      Dressing "Corporate"

So, you may have gathered that we're not the most corporate looking office in all the land! (Thank Gawds!)
But one of the big higher-ups was here from London yesterday and we had Bank people coming for presentations, so I thought I would actually dress the part rather than schlep in just in anything that's vaguely passable for office attire..

      Here's the result:
Shirt - TM Lewin (on sale); Skirt - Next (Outlet); Shoes - Primark
Earrings - Violet Reaction; Nails - Shellac (I shoulda taken note of the name of the colour.. oops!)
The mister arrived home just after I did, so silly photo taking ensued!!
That's our front door.. I kinda like having a black door...
I love the little "fishtail" detail on the back of the skirt.. can you see it??
Below is what it looks like close up.. but you can kinda see how it kicks out in the photo above..

Buttons and a W-I-D-E waistband to keep the post lunch tum in check!
I adore the print on this shirt!!
The bossman thinks it's pretty snazzy too... he told me!! ; )
(Tho he might not have said "snazzy".. but in my mind he did and that's what counts.. right?)

Well there you have it!! I clean up pretty nice eh?? :D It's past my home time and I think it's stopped raining finally, so I'm going to run the gauntlet and try to get home without getting rained on!! Wish me luck!!

Filling in the Blanks on a cold, grey, rainy Friday...

It was so promising when I woke up this morning.. the sun was shining GLORIOUSLY... and now it's wet and dull... :(  Work is D-E-A-D... I have filing to do... (don't I always!?!) but I'm maybe hopefully going to get an outfit post up for yesterday... but before all that.. I'ma fill in some blanks!!

      1.   The last movie I saw was       so long ago I don't remember! I haven't been to the cinema in months and I haven't watched a movie on tv in a while either... I watched SATC2 on my laptop on the train to York but that was like January sometime..

      2.  I want to    go home and be back in bed...

      3.  Surprises are     fun fun fun!!  .

      4.  The best accessory is   sunglasses... and hats! I love hats but I don't wear them nearly enough..

      5.  My favorite warm drink is     dependant on my mood... cafewise - a flat white, officewise - tea, latenightwise - turkish apple/herbal tea..

      6.  My favorite cold drink is       bubble tea!! I haven't found a place that does good bubble tea here.. tho I might attempt to make my own.. hmmmm...

      7.  Currently loving       shoes & maxis... I bought two pairs of oxfords/brogues yesterday & I pretty much want to buy every single maxi dress I see... *sigh*
